Diary extract No. 22
Things I will always love about Wintertime:

I have missed vin chaud, hot and sugary down my throat. I have missed the Christmas market, carols on the accordion and everyone bundled to the nines. I have missed the snow glittering in my hair and crunching under my toes. I have missed Saint Nicholas Day and leaving my shoes out for sweets. I have missed sneaking out of bed to sleep by the tree, twinkling lights lulling me to sleep. I have missed hotties and flannels keeping my toes warm under great big quilts and down duvets. I have missed building gingerbread houses, tasting peppermint and frosting on my tongue. I have missed stringing popcorn, sore fingers smelling like golden syrup. I have missed looking out the window, breath blooming on the frosted glass. I have missed ice skating, wobbly ankles and icy tumbles and elegant glides.

I have missed my eyelashes shimmering like tinsel from the snowfall, my cheeks red from the biting wind. I have missed the smell of sugar biscuits, cutting the dough into Christmas shapes. I have missed watching the Nutcracker, or rather squeezing my eyes shut and clutching my velvet seat. I have missed cups of cocoa, warming my palms and my insides. I have missed curling up beside the radiator, forgetting not to burn my toes. I have missed building snowmen, giving them scarves to keep warm and naming them all Albert. I have missed tiny little gifts with satin bows and parcels with brown wrapping and string. I have missed writing letters to the North Pole and sending them out with the afternoon post. I have missed pretending to be in Narnia, eating Turkish Delight with the White Witch in her ice castle.

I miss winter more than anything else, when it isn't around. Though the frosty scottish wind bites my toes & chills my lips I'd rather complain about this than anything else. I love seeing everybody all bundled up, too :) especially little ones in their jackets that are double the size of them :) xx

Love, you always spin me around with the most wonderful stories. I could see everything so perfectly in my mind's eye. Shimmering eyelashes and gingerbread houses and twinkling lights and envelopes embelished with the words, "To Santa, North Pole". I always wanted to visit the White Witch but she does scare me rather a lot, you brave dear. Oh and your photographs are effortlessly magical. ♥ ♥ ♥

The fact the snowmen are all called Albert is so sweet!:)

I am smiling dreamily from the tropic. I love what you have just written about, so much, so much, so much.

Well if I ever hear anyone saying how they hate winter this is what I'll show them. I wish more people would learn that it isn't all in 'not having your hair messed up'. There's a lot more in 'eyelashes shimmering like tinsel from the snowfall and cheeks red from the biting wind'. This is the real magic of winter, all these things you described so beautifully and all the other things your words made us think about.

I really like the first photo, birds in winter are wonderful. I have the same view from my balcony, a high tree and always birds on the top branches. I call them 'Supervisors' and envy them sometimes.
This post was stunning and it made me smile :)

Oh Elly! Out of sixteen comments, you are the only person who mentioned Merlin. I could talk for hours and hours about it. I am secretly in love with that lovely, clumsy, magical serving boy. ♥ The series finale was amazing. I really cannot wait to see what happens next year. It's going to be heart-stopping, I know that much. xxx

I hope your Winter is more than missing, that there's a bit of creating new things and habits as well. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful beautiful list of magical wintermoments.

Wow! I think you've captured the essence of winter! There's not much more to say than that.

I wish it was snowing here. It's not the same kind of winter without snow.

Merry Christmas!

like talking to trees, your whispers hidden in the wind. only sometimes the trees talk back. like wishing on a star and having the star wish on you. say what you like; there's always someone listening.
a very merry thank you.
